[STORMREPORTS] Severe Weather in Northern Maine

From: Robert & Carrie Lightbown (rlightbown{at}mfx.net)
Date: Sat Jun 28 2003 - 06:56:52 EDT

A line of severe thunderstorms caused quite a few problems last night across the Caribou-Presque Isle area up here in northern Maine. The storms rolled through between 6 and 6:30 pm EDT Friday evening. A wind gust to 55 mph was recorded at the National Weather Service office in Caribou. A small plane was flipped over at the Caribou airport. In Presque Isle, a wind gust to 58 mph was recorded at the Presque Isle airport. Damage in Presque Isle included three 30 foot flag poles were blown down at a church here in Presque Isle. I downloaded some radar images from the storm and it appears that the storms were collapsing as they moved across the area and must have had created a large gust front and likely some microbursts, because a roof was blown off a porch in the town of Connor which is about 10 miles north of Caribou. Here at my house no damage was done, but since we have a dirt driveway the gust front as it passed through caused dirt and sand to be blown an estimated 20 to 30 feet high and I witness s
everal dust devils in our driveway caused by the strong winds.

If I receive any other reports I will try to post them here.
