Much of the United Kingdom enjoyed above-average warmth on
Thursday as afternoon temperatures were widely in the 70s. For some
parts of the country, warmer than "normal" weather has prevailed for
about a month now. In London, England, for example, a 76-degree top
reading made Thursday the 20th consecutive day to have an
above-average high temperature. It was also the 29th day out of 30 to
have such a distinction. Through Thursday, the average temperature for
June here was nearly 5 degrees above the climatological mean.
The South American midcontinent has basked in abnormally warm
weather recently as well. In Asuncion, Paraguay, the transition from
late spring to early summer has been marked by an extended spell of
warm, even hot, weather. Thursday afternoon, temperatures rose to 85
degrees versus an average high in the lower 70s. From June 10th
through Thursday, each day registered an average temperature above the
daily climatological mean. During this stretch, the average
temperature was about 12 degrees above "normal".
Early Friday, Tropical Storm Carlos was inland over southern
Mexico. Near daybreak, the center of Carlos was ashore in the state
of Oaxaca about 130 miles east-southeast of Acapulco. Highest winds
about the small storm, which was drifting inland at 6 to 7 mph, were
between 55 and 60 mph. Carlos was forecast to swing westwards along
the seaward slopes of the Sierra Madre del Sur. But, barring a return
to nearby seas, such a path would inevitably weaken Carlos, robbing it
of storm status.
Much of eastern Canada has sweltered throughout the weak, and
Thursday was no exception. At Petawawa, Ontario, Thursday high was 94
degrees -- the fifth-straight day of 90 degrees. Ottawa, along with
Montreal, Quebec, reached 92 degrees, and Ottawa missed the record
daily high by 1 degree. The heat was even more intense over the hills
north of the Saint Lawrence Valley. La Tuque, QB, reached 98 degrees
Thursday; it was the second such high for the week. Bagotville,
Quebec, hit 97 degrees Thursday making for five of six days of
90-degree heat.
Heavy rains washed South Korea Friday. Rainfall was 4.4 inches at
Taejon, 3.2 inches at Pusan and 2.0 inches at Seoul.
