June 26, 2003 10:06 a.m.

Southern Ontario, Canada, and parts of southern Quebec endured
high heat again on Wednesday. At Toronto, the country's largest city,
at least 93 degrees was reached versus an average daily high of 76.
One suburb, Buttonville, registered 95 midafternoon degrees. The
national capital, Ottawa, climbed into the lower 90s for a
third-straight day. Lower 90s were also reached at several sites in
southern Quebec, including near Quebec City at Beauport. Meantime,
northeastern Ontario underwent a sharp cool-down Wednesday. Another
hot day is expected across these areas again Thursday, then a cold
front will bring some cooling for Friday. At Moosonee, the temperature
dropped into the middle 40s by late afternoon whereas highs each of
the preceding four days were 90-94 degrees.

One-hundred-degree heat was registered for a third-straight day
Wednesday on Mallorca, one of Spain's Balearic Islands in the
Mediterranean Sea. The average high here during the second half of
June is in the middle 80s.

The unusually hot weather that has gripped Italy much of this
week continued Thursday. Many valley and coastal locations saw highs in
the days 90s for the third straight day Wednesday and temperatures
had already soared into the 90s in many of these same areas by midday
Thursday. In the north, Milan, Italy had highs of 90 degrees or
higher everyday since June 18th. The mercury soared to a sizzling 96
degrees on Wednesday, which is well above the normal high of around
80. The excessive heat has taxed the power systems of the nation
leading to rolling black outs and brown outs. A cold front may bring
the area some relief this weekend.

Early Thursday morning, Tropical Depression 03E formed over the
eastern Pacific. The storm was located near 14.3 degrees north and
97.9 degrees west or about 200 miles south-southeast of Acapulco, MX,
and was tracking to the west-northwest at 8 mph. The system is
expected to continue on a west-northwest track over the next 24-48
hours as it gathers strength, and could reach tropical storm intensity
by Friday.
