Early the week, excessive rains have pounded eastern China. At
Nanchang, rainfall was 14.0 inches within 36 hours. Nearly 9 inches
fell in one 12-hour stretch. Other high amounts received within
little more than a day were: 10.2 inches at Zhenghe, and 9.6 inches
at Pucheng. Since the start of the week, rainfall was 9.6 inches at
Jingdezhen, and 9.5 inches at Qu Xian.
Eastern Canada had a sweltering start to the week. Monday,
Toronto, Ontario, tied a daily record high with 90 degrees. The high
of 91 degrees at Ottawa missed tying the record by one degree.
Montreal, Quebec, also reached 90 degrees. Meantime, in northern
Ontario, Monday's high was 94 degrees at Moosonee; here, even
Tuesday's low, 70 degrees, was above the daily mean high of 67
degrees. Tuesday brought no relief from the high heat. Toronto soared
to 91 degrees, and Ottawa's high of 92 set a new daily record high.
Montreal registered 90 degrees. At Moosonee, the 90-degree mark was
breached for a fourth consecutive day. Meantime, Tuesday's heat was
actually most intense over the Laurentian hills north of Quebec's
Saint Lawrence River. La Tuque sweltered at 98 degrees, and the
96-degree mark was reached at Roberval, Mistook, and Normandin.
A fearsome blizzard raged at Australia's Mawson base on the shores
of East Antarctica Tuesday through Tuesday night, local time.
Sustained winds blew 55 mph or higher for more than 24 hours reaching
100 mph Tuesday night. Wind-whipped snow shrouded the sky cutting the
visibility to essentially nil. Temperatures hovered mostly between 10
and 15 degrees above zero.
Coastal Queensland, Australia, was hit by a few unusual wintertime
downpours Tuesday into Wednesday, local time. At Mackay, showers
and thunderstorms dropped rainfall of 3.5 inches -- more than the
2.5-inch average rainfall for all of June.
Early Wednesday morning, an alert was hoisted for the possibility
of a tropical storm over the eastern Pacific Ocean southward from
Mexico's Gulf of Tehuantepec.
