Eastern Canada had a sweltering start to the week. Monday, Toronto,
Ontario, tied a daily record high with 90 degrees. The high of 91
degrees at Ottawa missed tying the record by one degree. Montreal,
Quebec, also reached 90 degrees. Meantime, in northern Ontario,
Monday's high of 94 degrees at Moosonee made for three-straight days
of 90-degree heat. Even Tuesday's low, 70 degrees, was above the
daily mean high of 67 degrees.
At Mangalore, Karnataka, India, another 5 inches of rain fell Monday
night and early Tuesday. Thus, since the start of last week, about 40
inches of rain has fallen at Mangalore -- a fitting start, indeed, to
the rainy summer monsoon.
Bhairawa, Nepal, had rainfall of 4.3 inches Tuesday.
Some abnormal summertime downpours struck Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania,
Sunday to Monday. Within 30 hours, thunderstorms and showers left 3.0
inches of rain whereas the mean June rainfall in this capital city is
1.3 inches.
Monday brought stifling heat to parts of southwestern Europe. On
Mallorca, one of Spain's Balearic Islands, a high of 103 degrees was
registered at Palma de Mallorca. Moreover, when factoring in the
strong sunshine, heightened humidity and other atmospheric aspects,
the AccuWeather RealFeel Temperature(tm) peaked at nearly 130 degrees.
On the Spanish mainland, 100-degree heat was recorded at Zaragoza and
Lerida. Italian hot spots included Foggia at 101 degrees and Alghero,
island of Sardinia, at 100.
As of Tuesday night, local time, two-day rainfall at Hachijojima,
Japan, was 8.2 inches. Lying south of Tokyo, Hachijojima is one of
the sub-tropical Nampo Islands.
June is the time of the "plum rains" in China's Yangtze River
basin. Fittingly, rainfall was 6.9 inches at Jingdezhen, 6.2 inches
at Qu Xian, and 6.0 inches at Langzhong. These rains fell within less
than 24 hours ended Tuesday evening, local time.
