Intense heat gripped southwestern Europe on Saturday, sending
temperatures into the 90s and even above 100 degrees from Spain and
Portugal to southern France. The Pais Vascos, or Basque lands, of
northern Spain and southwestern France well and truly baked: Bilbao
reached 104 degrees, as did San Sebastian -- each about 35 degrees
above average for the date. (That would be like New York City reaching
115 degrees). Nearby, Biarritz, France, hit 100 degrees, as did
Marseille and Toulouse. Elsewhere in southwestern France, Mont de
Marsan registered 101 degrees at midday. The heat spread over parts of
Italy, too, sending Milan and Piacenza, along with other towns, into
the 90s. Even in Switzerland, the 90-degree mark was reached or
exceeded at Sion and Locarno.
On the other side of Europe, a large storm centered along the
Russian border was causing chilly, wet weather. From northern Ukraine
through Belarus and Poland, Saturday was showery with highs only in
the 50s and 60s, 10 to 20 degrees below normal for the date.
Early Sunday, EDT, slowly weakening Tropical Depression Blanca was
centered about 360 miles west-southwest of Acapulco, Mexico. Having
reversed direction since Saturday, Blanca was now moving toward the
northeast at 5 mph but was still not expected to be any threat to
land.
In Mangalore, India, 23.2 inches of rain fell in the 3-day period
ending Sunday morning.
In the past two days, Farafanga, Madagascar has been drenched by
5.94 inches of rain.
