At Mangalore, Karnataka, India, Monday brought a break in the
well-nigh endless downpours of last week. Friday night through Sunday
night alone, rainfall was nearly 23 inches. For the week as a whole,
rainfall was about 35 inches.
Here are a few highlights from the latest heat wave in western
Europe. Sunday in France, Gourdon saw 105 degrees whereas Bordeaux and
Lyon hit 101. The heat was good for departures of 25 to 30 degrees
above normal. Spain had 103 degrees at Gerona, and 102 at Logrono and
Zaragoza. Palma de Mallorca, which registered 100 degrees on Sunday,
read 101 degrees at midday, Monday. Worse, the humidity made it feel
as hot as 125 degrees.
On the South Pacific island of Rapa, rainfall was about 5 inches
within 24 hours ended Monday. The storm unleashed winds of near gale
strength.
