Much of Portugal endured searing heat again on Friday. Lisbon's
91-degree high was 15 degrees above average, yet low when compared to
the 96- and 103-degree highs set Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.
Evora reached 103 degrees Friday after surging to 105 Thursday. The
town of Braganca, set nearly 2300 feet above sea level in the far
northeast, climbed to 97 degrees Friday versus an average high near
78. In nearby Spain, Friday's hot spots were Cordoba at 103 degrees,
and both Tortosa and Ciudad Real at 100.
By midday, Saturday, there were some striking observations of
temperature in the sweltering southwest of Europe. The Pais Vascos, or
Basque lands, of northern Spain and southwestern France well and truly
baked: Bilbao reached 104 degrees, as did San Sebastian -- each about
35 degrees above average for the date. Nearby, Biarritz, France, hit
100 degrees. Elsewhere in southwestern France, Mont de Marsan
registered 101 degrees at midday.
Through Thursday, June had been abnormally warm in much of Europe.
Indeed, mean temperatures were 2 or more degrees above average from
much of the United Kingdom and parts of Scandinavia to the continent's
southwest corner and Balkan Peninsula. A large part of the described
area was 5-10 degrees above average during the first 19 days of the
month. Departures of 10-15 degrees above the climatological mean were
registered in parts of eastern Spain, eastern France, southern
Germany, western Austria, Switzerland and far northern Italy. In
contrast, western Russia and some former Soviet republics were cooler
than average. From Moscow eastward nearly to the Urals, temperatures
averaged 5-10 degrees below "normal".
Early Saturday, Blanca was a was a dissipating tropical depression
over the eastern North Pacific Ocean southwest of Mexico. Full break
up of this weather maker was foreseen within the next 24 hours.
Here are a few tallies of rainfall gathered within the last three
days from western India: Mangalore -- 15.2 inches; Goa -- 15.0 inches;
Ratnagiri -- 10.0 inches. Elsewhere, Calcutta collected 5.2 inches of
rain within little more than 24 hours ended Saturday.
Chilly rains triggered in part by the remains of Typhoon Soudelor
amounted to 4.5 inches within about 24 hours at Nemuro, Hakkaido,
Japan.
