Early Friday, Tropical Storm Blanca faded slowly over the
eastern North Pacific Ocean off southwestern Mexico. Before daybreak,
Blanca's top sustained winds were near 40 mph; its center lay
about 260 miles south-southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico. The storm was
drifting towards the west at 6 to 7 mph. Drifting westwards for the
next two to three days, Blanca was forecast to slowly weakening at
sea.
Friday brought another bout of heavy seasonal rains triggered by
the rainy southwesterly monsoon over the Indian Subcontinent. Western
coastal India was hit hard: two-day rainfall reached 11.5 inches at
Mangalore, 10.9 inches at Mumbai (Bombay), and 7.0 inches at
Ratnagiri. In Goa, rainfall was 10.3 inches within 24 hours ended
Friday. But locally- excessive rainfall was not confined to the west:
Jharsuguda, in the east, had 10.4 inches of rain. Even Delhi had 3.0
inches of rain -- two-thirds of June's mean tally -- Friday.
Sweltering heat baked virtually all of Portugal on Thursday.
Lisbon, the capital, soared to 103 degrees or nearly 30 degrees above
average. Evora registered 105 degrees. It was hot right to the water
as the seaside city of Porto spiked to 98 degrees and even into the
highlands where Braganca reached 92; both sites have an average high
in the middle 70s during this time of the year.
Thursday saw summery heat spread through the heart of
Saskatchewan, where highs to 95 degrees were set. At Saskatoon, the
high of 94 was a new record for the date. Even Lynn Lake, in the far
northwest of neighboring Manitoba, reached 90 degrees, or much above
the normal high of 67.
