Parts of southern England were unusually warm on Monday. At
London's Heathrow airport, for example, the high of 82 degrees was
well above the 69-degree average. Warmer than average weather has
prevailed here for the better part of a month now. Indeed, the last
day to have a mean temperature below average was May 25th. From May
28th through Monday, the average temperature was nearly 6 degrees
above "normal".
Tuesday, Typhoon Soudelor whirled off northeastern Luzon Island,
Philippines. Before daybreak, EDT, the ill-defined eye of Soudelor was
about 435 miles north-northeast of Manila, or 100 miles east of the
small Batan Islands, whence it was headed towards the north-northwest
at 11-12 mph with sustained winds of 85 mph. Soudelor was forecast to
head northwards to the Sakishima Archipelago of Japan within 18-24
hours. A brush with the southwestern mainland of Japan or even
southeastern South Korea was foreseen for Thursday, local time.
Early this week, northern Luzon Island, Philippines, was doused by
Soudelor even though it never cross land. At Baguio, a highland city,
at least 16 inches of rain fell within about 36 hours. About one foot
of rain doused sea-side Dagupan.
Bangkok, Thailand, had rainfall of 4.4 inches in two outbursts
early this week.
It's been a wet start to the week in southwestern Japan. Beginning
Sunday, rainfall has been 6.4 inches at Kagoshima, and 5.4 inches at
Miyazaki. Saturday included, Tanegashima has had 8.5 inches.
At the Mawson station of East Antarctica, sustained winds reached
70 to 80 mph for several hours Tuesday at temperatures slightly below
the 10-degree mark.
Warming waters of the Gulf of Oman have made for some remarkable
observations of humidity along neighboring shores of the Arabian
Peninsula. At Al Fujayrah, UAE, dew points reached 91 degrees. Given
the temperature of 97, blazing sun and light wind, AccuWeather
RealFeel Temperature (tm) soared to 140 degrees -- truly
life-threatening discomfort. In Oman, the port of Qaboos observed dew
points to 90 degrees.
