BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (Reuters) - Floods caused by unusually heavy rain
have killed seven people and forced more than 50,000 to leave their homes
in Argentina's agricultural heartland, officials said on Wednesday.
The governor of the province of Santa Fe, former Formula One race car
driver Carlos Reutemann, called it "the worst flood in history" and put an
emergency food plan in motion.
The Salado River has risen to 19 feet, more than six feet above normal, and
with rains forecast to continue until Thursday morning, officials expected
the water to continue rising.
Last week alone the affected areas got 56 inches of rain -- almost double
the annual average of 32 inches -- local officials said.
