[STORMREPORTS] Snow Report from Beech Mountain NC

From: Roger D Rafler (roger.rafler{at}juno.com)
Date: Mon Mar 31 2003 - 02:39:16 EST

This just in...from a college student buddy of mine who is an atmospheric
sciences major at UNCA (Go Bulldogs!). He and a fellow met major took a
trip up Beech Mountain NC yesterday (Sunday 30 March):

Just got back from going to Beech Mountain! What a blast! Beech is
at about 5100 ft and we made it to the top, although it was slow going
since
the road was completely covered in snow and fairly steep! We hit heavy
snow
around Linville, then it tapered off by the time we got to the top of
Beech,
but they had 14" up there with 4 foot drifts in spots and winds sustained

around 35 mph! The temp was 16F, so the snow was dry and blowing snow
reduced visibility quite a lot (perhaps as low as 1/8th a mile or so). It
was
awesome!!!

I loved it! Even ended up jumping in a snow drift, lol :-) Gotta love
upslope
snow!

If you're not too familar with Beech mountain, it's in Avery county,
located
not too far from Boone and right near Sugar Mtn so it's a pretty heavy
ski
area. There's actually a very scenic little town on the top of Beech,
with
their own small police station, a mercantile store, some restaurants,
etc.
Much different than the rather deserted Mt. Mitchell (which can't be
accessed
during snow events since the parkway is closed).

For those on this list who aren't familiar with the mountains of western
North Carolina and eastern Tennessee, they are the highest mountains in
all of eastern North America. Mt. Mitchell NC is the highest at an
elevation of 6,684 feet above sea level.
