2002-2003 Final Winter Report - WeatherMatrix HQ State College PA
*PERIOD OF RECORD: 8/1997-3/2003

The winter season smashed the previous winters here in Central Pennsylvania.

2002-2003 brought us 76" of snow, a low temperature of 0 F and a low wind
chill of -34F.

The season started out with significant snow on October 29th, the mercury
dipped to 3 degrees on December 9th, then finished out with a reading of 0
degrees on March 7th and snowcover that disappeared on March 18th.

Records established this winter at HQ*:

- Coldest Temperature: This record was broken 16 Times throughout
season. Zero degrees F on 9 days; Previous record was 4F.
- Coldest Windchill Ever: Broken 8 Times throughout season. -34 on Jan
26th was lowest; Previous record was -28F.
- Coldest Temperature in March: The low temperature of 3 degrees F on
December 9th was unprecedentedly early.
- Coldest Temperature in March: The low temperature of 1 degree F on March
7th was unprecedentedly late.
- Earliest Significant Snowfall Ever (Oct. 29th): It had only snowed over
one inch once before during the period of record: Nov 14, 1997.
- Most Snowfall Ever: 75.9" -- More than twice any previous seasonal
total. Nearly 30" above normal.
- Most Snowfall In One Day: 15" (Feb 16-17) Previous records were around 12"
- Most Snowfall In One Storm: 15" (Feb 16-17) Previous records were around 12"
- Most Days With Frozen Precip: 72 Out Of 141 From 1st to Last Precip
- Most Days With Snowcover: 119 Out Of 146 From 1st to Last Occurrence

What about local records that go back farther?

Official records kept by Penn State University indicate that this winter
season was in the top 10 snowiest years in the last 110 years. The average
temperature ranked in the top 20 coldest years.
