Storm Report for Temple, Bell County, Texas
for Tuesday, March 25, 2003

Turned out to be an excited late afternoon and evening here in Central Texas as a line of severe thunderstorms moved through the county. We had mostly to partly cloudy skies today with a high of 75 degrees. We were put under Severe Thunderstorm Watch 74 to be in effect from 3:30 p.m CST to 9:00 p.m. CST. At this time I was in Coryell County about 35 miles northwest of Temple just about to head back home. We noticed some storm towers beginning to build to our east and as we traveled east we passed under these clouds with only some light rain. We were about 20 miles out of Temple when a Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued for McLennan County (Waco area to our north).

We were just getting back into repeater range for my 2 meter handi-talkie so turned it on and several spotters were reporting funnel clouds in Killeen in western Bell County (my county). We didn't have a good visual on this storm as we were traveling in almost the opposite direction. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued for Bell County at 4:30 p.m. CST until 5:30 p.m. CST. Around 4:45 p.m. CST, I got a call from my brother who works in Killeen also reporting a funnel cloud.

I got back into Temple around 5 p.m. CST and headed to the house to make a quick change into POV.I then headed to my brother's house, who has a nice high spot, to spot the storms moving in from the west. About this time, the storm took a more SE turn bypassing my location to the SE and passing across the SW part of Bell County. Another Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued at 5:30 p.m. CST until 6:30 p.m. CST. There were spotter reports of 1" to 1.75" hail in the SW part of the county. The Bell County EOC passed along a commercial pilot report of a tornado on the ground in the southern part of the county but this was not confirmed by any spotters in the area.

Local news at 6 p.m. CST was showing video of two funnel clouds in the Killeen/Fort Hood area in the western part of the county. There were no damage reported from either funnel cloud as they were very brief. Checking around the Weatherbug stations in the western part of the county, one station on Fort Hood reported a 77 mph wind gust.

The NWSFO in Fort Worth forecasted in their HWO this morning that there was a possibility of severe weather today along and east of IH 35, which runs through Temple. They hit it right on the button, at least on our end of the CWA, as the first storms started to build about 20 miles to the west of IH 35 and continued to develop right over us until right around 7:45 p.m. CST, when we had brief heavy rain as the cool front moved through.
