20-year storm coupled with cold leaves Railbelt in tatters
"An intense storm of frigid north winds walloped Southcentral Alaska on
Wednesday night and Thursday morning with hurricane-force gusts that caused
widespread and sometimes bizarre damage across a vast region from Talkeetna
through downtown Anchorage to the Kenai Peninsula.
The wind tore off roofs and littered streets with shingles, flipped trucks
and planes, shattered windows, froze and burst pipes, toppled trees,
whipped ground fires out of control and triggered power outages involving
thousands of people.
On the ground, gusts peaked at 99 mph at a fire station in the Mat-Su area
and at 71 mph at the National Weather Service station near Ted Stevens
Anchorage International Airport. Sustained winds likely hit 50 mph across
many exposed areas of western and northern Anchorage, according to
meteorologist Dave Vonderheide. "

The windstorm Wednesday night hammered Anchorage International Airport,
prompting flight controllers to evacuate the tower, grounding jetliners and
causing extensive damage to one of the terminals. The airport was closed
more than nine hours before reopening Thursday.
