Geoff Mackley, the worlds number one Cyclone, Typhoon and Hurricane
chaser reports the following.
Severe Tropical Cyclone Erica has made landfall on New Caledonia between
Kone and Bourail.... packing destructive winds and torrential rain. The
cyclone started at around 0400hrs and went til about 0900hrs. I managed
to drive in the eye of Erica for some time before letting it overtake me
near Poya, cyclone proof buildings remained intact, some other
buildings were completely destroyed, including the school in Poya, roofs
lifted and all power, mobile phone and telephone lines are cut along
with the main road to Noumea in numerous places with flash floods,
trees, and power lines. Locals who spoke some english said it is the
worst cyclone ever in New Caledonia... 1634hrs local time...
