[STORMREPORTS] Wind record. Smithsburg, MD 2 NE

Date: Sun Feb 23 2003 - 18:02:25 EST

Hidi-ho good neighbors. Greetings from the high desert of the Mid Atlantic.
El Nino is showing that it really means business this time around. Record
snowfall and precipitation readings this winter here at my homestead in the
hills along with freakishly strong winds. This February is already the
snowiest and wettest on record. It will most likely go down as the third
coldest. And then there is the winds. At 12:40 PM today (Sunday) the wind
gusted out of the NW at 54 mph. This is the fourth day this month the wind
gusted 50+ mph. That is a new record for any one month surpassing 3 such days
in November 2002. The highly unusual winds (even for my homestead in the
hills) can be traced all the way back to last February. The average wind in
February 2002 was a Mt. Washington like 20.1 mph. It surpassed the previous
record by nearly 4 mph. Since then the wind records have been falling like
dominos. Here is a short list of strong wind gusts. This list is broken down
into three groups, November through February 23, the year 2002, and the 26
year average.

                                         Nov. - Feb. 23 2002
 Yearly Ave.
Days w/gusts >= 40 mph 41 62
38
Days w/gusts >= 50 mph 11 14
 8

It is a good thing I fastened down my toupee with a nail gun. {:0>} Until
later.
                  Jim
