Winchester VA
My final snow total was 22", and in rural sections of my county 30" were
measured. The 30" total was the mentioned in media reports, and
according to the TWC, was 3rd highest total in the mid Atlantic region.
In Baltimore, it was deepest snowstorm in history, and in Washington was
bumped into 5th place by the wrap around snow Monday Night.
In my town, it was ranked 5th place by the local newspaper from records
that back to at least 1962, & perhaps to 1948.
Snow total from previous snow storms, with my information noted in
(parenthesis).
1. March 5-6 1962: 30"
2. Feb 11 1983: 28.5" (Feb 10-12: 33.5")
3. March 13-14: 24" (March 14th: 20")
Jan 7-9 1996: 24" (Jan 6-10: 30")
5. Feb 15-16 2003: 20" (Feb 14-18th: 22")
6. Dec 31st 1970: 18"
7. Dec 18-19th 1964: 17"
I made the decision to measure away from the house but in the backyard.
Although the reading could have been higher if i measured in the front
yard, there was old snow on the ground, and i would have to climb steps.
I did not use a snow board, as it seldom snows for 5 staight days here.
Although my deepest snow cover never went above 20", i added my daily
snowfalls, and came up with 22". The Fri/Sat snow left 4", there was 19"
on the ground at 12am Monday, and IP was beginning. I went out about
11am Monday, and measured 20" on the ground, and there was 2" of new
snow in my footprints of the night before. Between 6pm Mon and 9am
Tuesday, Another 1" of snow fell.
There were several buildings that had damage or collapsed from the
weight of 2-3 feet of snow. Locally, a house slid of it's foudation. In
Baltimore, the roof of the B&O Railroad Musuem caved in.
Most of the area had 2 days to digout, and returned to work today. It
was my first day back at the mall (which was also closed 3 days.) In
Washington DC, rush hour lasted all day, as the mass transportation was
at about 50% capacity, and most roads had lost lanes to snow banks &
actual removal of snow.
In my area, phyiscal snow removal continues downtown & in some
residental neighborhoods. In many residental areas, only single lane
rutted paths in ice several inches thick excists. Most if not all local
secondary roads should have been plowed now.
In the Baltimore/Washington area, tomorrow is the day to call if a snow
plow has forgot your street.
I spent Monday & Tuesday afternoons shoveling snow at my home, but
admitedly neighbors' snowblowers helped the most.
Schools will be closed region wide again Thursday, and several have
announced the obvious, that roads will still be unsafe Friday.
With allotted snow days scarce before the Storm of '03, kids have a
week off now instead of at spring break and/or delaying summer vacation.
While at work today, i noticed parents seemed anxious for kids to return
to school, and some students enjoying the break. I asked a boy about 8
years old, he said "Not yet. I can hardly make it of the house." Yet he
made it to the mall. In Washington, volunteers were asked to shovel
school sideworks. Some parents took up the offer.
Local papers were printed, but i had no delivery until today. The
Winchester Star, printed just 5 miles away, was supposed to be delivered
on my street sometime tonight. Limited mail delivery (including my
street) were done Tuesday. The USPS had a goal of 100% delivery today.
There is likelyhood of stream/urban flooding this weekend as 1 to 2" of
rain is forecast Friday & Saturday. Ice jam flooding on rivers is
possible. http://wxmatrix-membersonly/group/VA_StormNet/message/21187
