Hidi-ho good neighbors. Greetings from the high desert of the Mid Atlantic.
Ahh, the memories from my youth. Back in 1979, 1983, 1987, 1993, 1996. The
feeling of getting my car stuck in a snow bank in the middle of nowhere. The
feeling of snow slamming into your face at nearly the speed of sound. The
feeling of your boot being sucked off your foot after it becomes stuck in a
large snow drift. The feeling of no feeling in your hands, face and feet.
Winter........boy do I hate it. The records are falling at my station like
the dreaded mountain camels in the deep snow. The three day event is now
officially a blizzard at my homestead in the hills as the wind gusted above
40 mph for three consecutive hours on Sunday night. I had a peak gust of 50
mph just after 8 PM. That is the third day this month with a peak gust 50+
mph. That ties a record for the most 50+ mph days in any month with November
2002. The snow total for the blizzard was 25.1 inches. Snow drifts of seven
feet were seen in open areas. My neighbor made a cool snow chair, snow
remote, and snow TV out of a six foot drift in his yard. My only snow shovel
in under a five foot drift in the back yard. I guess I will wait until spring
to shovel the walkway. Let us get to the numbers. The blizzard was the third
largest snowstorm on record.
Top Five Snowstorms
1. 31.0 - Jan. 7-8, 1996 (42.0 inches fell in six days)
2. 28.0 - Feb. 11-12, 1983
3. 25.1 - Feb. 15-17, 2003
4. 25.0 - March 13-14, 1993
5. 21.8 - Feb. 22-23, 1987

On February 16, 18.0 inches of snow fell. It was the fourth greatest one day
snow total on record. (Greatest - 27.5 - February 11, 1983)

February is already the snowiest February on record.
Top Five February Snowfalls
1. 31.4 - 2003
2. 28.2 - 1983
3. 22.2 - 1987
4. 22.0 - 1979
5. 20.3 - 1993
(February's average snowfall is 7.4 inches.)

This winter's snowfall of 57.2 inches is just short of the greatest winter
snowfall of 57.3 inches set in the winter of 1995-96.

This snowfall season total of 59.0 inches is already the third highest on
record. (Greatest - 80.1 inches -- 1995-96) The average yearly snowfall is
30.6 inches.

The February snowfall total so far of 31.4 inches is the second highest
amount for any month behind the 42.6 inches that fell in January 1996.

It is ironic that last February's snowfall and the snowfall season of 2001-02
were both the lowest on record.

Last but not least, the max and min temperatures on Feb. 16 were both
records. The min temperature of 9 degrees is a new record low for the date
surpassing 11 degrees set back in 1987. The max temperature of 13 degrees is
a new record low max for the date and is also the lowest max on record for
the month of February surpassing the old record of 15 degrees set back Feb.
4, 1996.

Okay, this email is long enough. Until later.
