[STORMREPORTS] Blizzard '03 Update - Central NJ

From: Eric Greenberg (green99{at}optonline.net)
Date: Sun Feb 16 2003 - 17:01:29 EST

North-Central NJ had its first snow flake (for today) at about 1:45 PM this
afternoon. We were on the leading edge of a polar front that was initially
blocking the moisture. Only about 10 miles south of here had heavy snow
beginning at dawn, with already 12 inches on the ground in spots as of this
report. In 3 hours here we have easily seen 3 inches, although it is hard
to measure because of the 20-25 wind gusts from the northeast.

The latest forecast was just increased to 18-25 inches expected by late
tomorrow afternoon. We currently have near white-out conditions and the
worst is supposedly yet to come. I'm twitching from memories of the
1/6/96-1/7/96 storm that dumped 33 inches in this area. That was supposed
to be a 100-year storm.

Well, wish us luck and the same back at all of you. This will be one for
the record books.

Incidentally, I just heard on the news as I was typing this that out
Governor has declared a State of Emergency in NJ and has requested National
Guard troops to help clear the snow. This is more for the southern
counties in NJ, but applies to the entire state. All travel has been
banned except for emergencies.

420 PM EST sun Feb 16 2003

...Winter Storm Warning for tonight through Monday...

Snow...heavy at times...will continue over the region through
Monday. The snow may mix with sleet at times on Monday. Storm total
snow accumulations of 18 to 25 inches are expected.

Strong northeast winds will continue into Monday and will cause
blowing and drifting snow and near blizzard conditions.

Travel will be very difficult. Postpone any travel that is not
absolutely necessary. By staying off the roadways...Highway crews
are better able to keep roads passable so emergency vehicles may
still travel.

Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or your local media for the latest
information on this major winter weather event.
