Winchester VA
THe second wave, the "main event", began at 1am. Snow rates between 4am
until 3pm have been averaging 3/4" per hour. At 2:45pm there was 15.5"
on the ground.
Snow rates the next several hours expected to be 2-4" per hour w/
thundersnow possible. Snow after 10pm will still be be upwards of 1" per
hour & lighten after dawn Monday. Snow may not end until dusk Monday. I
think we may end up with 3 feet in this area.
The city and county both have declared a snow emergency, banning all but
essential driving. Those getting stuck are subject to fines. In
Winchester, Snow Plan C was enacted about about 1pm. Snow plows & front
end loaders are clearing streets. When the snow quits, it will be hauled
away by dump trucks from downtown areas & some city parking lots.
City police gave up their cruisers for Humvees. County sherrif deputies
are in 4 wheel drives. State police, even w/ chains on, are having
difficulty.
Unplowed streets are not passable for many vehicles, and the primary
routes & I-81 is covered soon after the plows do their work.
Schools were to use Monday as a snow make up day. Now that is canceled,
& it will likely be several days before some systems reopen.
In the vidcap, a birdbath pedestal is almost buried and 3 foot drifts
are noted near the shed. At about 9:00 in the shot, the snow is 3/4 high
of the fence height.
