[STORMREPORTS] Blizzard '03 Update - WeatherMatrix HQ & Beyond

From: Jesse Ferrell (WeatherMatrix) (jesse{at}weathermatrix.net)
Date: Sun Feb 16 2003 - 16:16:59 EST

Here at WeatherMatrix HQ in Central PA, very little snow has fallen, 2" at
best. We are going to be too far north to see extremely heavy amounts but
it will still be significant, with local predictions ranging from
6-22". Temperatures are EXTREMELY cold... our low was 6 degrees and our
high was 10, yet we have had snow all day -- this is the coldest snow I
have ever experienced. Temperatures as far south as Washington D.C. are in
the teens as well. Because of these extremely cold temperatures, road
travel is very hazardous.

DC SHUT DOWN BY WORST SNOWSTORM IN YEARS

"A relentless snow storm that touched nearly half of the United States
blanketed the U.S. East Coast on Sunday, severely restricting travel on the
roads, shutting down airports and confining millions of people to their
homes on a long holiday weekend.
The Baltimore-Washington (BWI) airport and Washington's Reagan National
Airport closed on Sunday. Dulles International Airport, in nearby Virginia,
operated one runway but canceled many flights, leaving passengers stranded.
The storm forced millions in the Mid-Atlantic states to remain indoors,
with their roadways, neighborhoods and downtowns a wintry white. There was
no letup in snowfall that was expected to continue for a full 24 hours.
"In Washington we could see in the order of two feet of snow -- or more --
before it's all over with," said Brian Korty, a meteorologist at the
National Weather Service
