"Hundreds of people in northern Italy were evacuated Tuesday after days of
heavy rain caused rivers to overflow their banks and flood into towns
across the north. In Milan itself, parts of the city were inundated,
paralyzing traffic in some parts. In Venice, the water was at about 85
centimeters (33 inches) above sea level, again causing troublesome flooding
for the canal-city, which is often hit by high water. "
