"PORTLAND, Maine –– Storms
packing a dangerous mix of snow and freezing rain sent cars sliding off
highways across New England and left thousands of people without
electricity
as ice-laden tree limbs crashed down on power lines.
The blustery nor'easter made for treacherous driving as thick layers of
ice
formed on highways and downed trees made roads impassable.
Connecticut residents reported hearing loud cracking sounds as ice
overcame
trees. Tens of thousands of New Englanders were still without power
early
Monday, including more than 57,000 customers of Connecticut Light &
Power.
"Every 15 seconds there were thunder shots and the trees were snapping
in
half," Mark Fleming of Burlington told WVIT-TV. "It was like gunshots
going
off in the back yard. It was quite amazing."
Residents of southern Maine awoke to the season's first major snow, but
the
white stuff eventually transformed into freezing rain. Dozens of cars
slid off
highways and speed limits were reduced to 45 mph on the Maine Turnpike
and
Interstate 95.
An estimated 15,000 Central Maine Power customers were without
electricity
Sunday afternoon, but that number had fallen to 2,500 by Monday morning
even
though a second round of precipitation hit the state Sunday night.
Falling trees created a mess in Connecticut, where dozens of schools
canceled
classes for Monday.
n Massachusetts, cars spun off roads in dozens of minor accidents,
police said.
Early Sunday, a motorist was seriously injured when his car slid off
Interstate
93 north in Andover and crashed into a tree. Some 18,000 customers lost
power, mostly in Central Massachusetts, but all but a fraction had
service
restored by Monday morning."
