[STORMREPORTS] Temperature record and snow. Smithsburg, MD 2 NE

Hidi-ho good neighbors. Greetings from the high desert of the Mid Atlantic.
What a day yesterday was! I went from rain to drizzle to freezing rain to
freezing drizzle to sleet to snow to snow flurries. All I needed was cats and
dogs falling from the sky and a volcanic eruption and I would have had a full
day. {:0>} It was fun trying to squeeze all of that into my "Precipitation
Types" section of my weather journal.
Now where to start? Snowfall total at my homestead in the hills, 0.3 of an
inch. That is a new 24 hour record for the month of October. Over 3/4 of an
inch of snow fell over the higher elevations just above my homestead. I had
0.1 of an inch fall yesterday (Oct. 30) and another 0.2 of an inch fell after
midnight. The 0.2 of an inch that fell today ties the greatest calendar day
snowfall for October set on October 10, 1979. The rain quickly changed over
to freezing rain then sleet to snow and only the bridges became icy as the
snow accumulated on the cars and grassy surfaces.
Yesterday's max temperature was 35 degrees. That was set just after midnight.
It obliterates the October record for the coldest max of 41 degrees set on
October 31, 1993. Mind you, this October is the same October that saw the
record high max (88 on Oct. 3) and min (69 on Oct 4). The winds were quite
brisk out of the NNE at 36 mph and the wind chill dripped to a very cold 6
degrees. The temperature overnight rose to 34 degrees and the snow has
melted. The could be an interesting winter. Until later.......
                 Jim
