"EL PROGRESO, Mexico (Reuters) - Hurricane Isidore forced the evacuation of
70,000 people from Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula on Sunday, lashing the region
famous for its Mayan ruins and beach resorts with driving rain and huge
waves. In Merida, several downtown streets were ankle deep in water and a
handful of mature trees -- some two stories tall -- were uprooted by the
winds, blocking avenues. Winds smashed windows, witnesses said, and some
areas suffered power blackouts because of fallen electricity posts."
