NORFOLK FLASH FLOODS
Although Virginia, in general, escaped flooding rains from Leftover
Hanna, Norfolk & VA beach was not as lucky. Several inches fell between
3 & 7pm Monday in large sections of the region.
The NWS failed to issue _any_ warning for the event, choosing instead to
issue SPS's instead.

I checked the AWS stations for rain totals (the last 2 are actually data
provided by the Wakefield VA NWS website). (Peak rain rates in
parentheses)
Norfolk Academy 4.48" (4.08")
Norfolk State University 2.99" (3.52")
Greenbrier Intermediate School [Norfolk] 2.55" (2.92")
Cox HS [Va Beach} 3.50" (3.16")
------
Oceana NAS [VA Beach] 1.42"
Norfolk Int Airport [3.44" in 6hrs btw 2 & 8pm]
------
Image 1: Doppler radar indicated that rain rates averaging 2.5" per hour
fell between 3:30 & 4pm Monday in VA's Tidewater section.
The area getting the heaviest rain at the time of this shot was near
Sulfolk; and Norfolk was getting rain rates around 1.75"/per hour.

4-5pm Mon, and then reset the totals when it came up.
The heaviest totals of 6.9" fell in the Rocky Mount NC area.

Image 3; The heavy rain snarled traffic in large sections of Norfolk
east to Va Beach. This webcam shot looks at I-264 {at} Mount Trashmore.
In case you wonder about the name: The area was used as a garbage dump
until the mid or late 1980's. The government then decided they needed a
park. It was then covered with soil & planted with grass & trees. It is
elevated, and when Norfolk gets their once a season snow, kids of all
ages come out with make shift sleds & slid down then aprox 100' slope.
