ASSOCIATED PRESS:
"The U.S. 90 causeway across Mobile Bay, where tides were running four
feet, was closed. Other roads flooded in Alabama at Fort Morgan, Bayou La
Batre and Dauphin Island, said Randy McKee, a meteorologist with the
National Weather Service ( news - web sites). Fallen tree limbs and
scattered power outages were reported across the region. The storm had
sustained winds of near 50 mph, unchanged since late Friday, extending up
to 145 miles east and south from its center. A wind gust of 66 mph was
recorded at Pensacola Regional Airport. A storm surge of 2 to 4 feet was
predicted. While the center of the storm was near Mobile, Ala., most of the
rain — as much as four inches in a three hour period — was falling to the
east in southern Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. Gov. Jeb Bush declared
a state of emergency in all counties west of the Apalachicola River in the
Florida Panhandle, clearing the way for state assistance, such as supplies
and law enforcement personnel."
