Storms wreck havoc across southeastern Brazil (Associated Press)

"Strong winds and heavy rain across southeastern Brazil prompted
authorities to cancel an independence day parade in Rio and to close
airports and bridges Saturday. Winds of about 100 kph (60 mph) knocked down
dozens of trees in Rio de Janeiro. Authorities canceled a military parade
in the city center to celebrate 180 years of Brazil's independence. Several
neighborhoods in western Rio lost electricity and telephone connections and
Rio's domestic airport and a bridge over a bay connecting Rio to the nearby
city of Niteroi were closed in the morning, Carvalho said. Several houses
in eastern Sao Paulo collapsed in the wind and rain, but no injuries were
reported. The storms were not predicted by Brazil's meteorological
institute and caught authorities by surprise. Weather conditions in Rio and
Sao Paulo improved during later morning hours."
