Hidi-ho good neighbors. Greetings from the high desert of the Mid Atlantic.
If the extreme drought was not bad enough my station in the hills has
experienced the warmest summer on record. Several temperature records were
tied or felled during the June to August time period. The drought continues
to be a problem here in Western Maryland as most of the beneficial rainfall
of the past week has fallen east of my area. Below is a list of new August
and summer records.
August
*Twenty-one days with temperatures at or above 90 degrees is a new record
surpassing twenty days set in 1988.
*Six days with temperatures at or above 100 degrees is a new record for any
month. The six days of 100+ degree temperatures actually surpasses the record
for 100+ degree temperatures for an ENTIRE year which is five days set in
1988 & 2001.
*August precipitation of 3.68 inches is 0.24 inches above average. That is
the first time monthly precipitation has been at or above average in the last
seventeen months and it is only the second time it has happened in the last
twenty-three months.
*It is the third warmest August on record.
