Winchester VA

Hello everybody,

Haven't had the time to post lately... but then again, weather has been
dull to report.

Most of the Mid Atlantic is severe to extream drought. Parts of the MD
eastern shore was off by 17" a few days ago, more than 6 months of rain!

We here in the Shenadoah Valley have been very lucky. We have had dry
months (Sept 01 to Feb this year, & Aug, but the other months were at to
well above normal.

The Wednesday rain event gave us .67", and the onth total is 1.67", or
just under half normal. The 1 year deficit is now just 1.6" short.

Drought Emergency Statements from the NWS offices in
Baltimore/Washington & Wakefield:

Image 1: Several Towns in central VA, west of Fredericksburg, depend
heavily or
solely on the Rapidan River. The level of the river was literally
measured in inches Tue. As a result, all public toilets were
closed(instead portable outside units were used).

Laundromats were to be closed 5 of 7 days, and all outside uses of water
had been banned.

The area received 2-3" of rain Wed & Wed night, & the emergency was
delayed a few more days.

And this amazing! This is the gauge reading for the Rapdan River near
Culpeper Co. Only 4" deep and 10% normal flow... after 3" of rain!

Image 2: This Intellicast image shows rain totals for the past week,
although a lot of this fell Wed & Wed night.

The areas that needed it the most (west of Fredericksburg), got the
most. The Shenadoah Valley westward had less than inch, & some had less
than one tenth "

With the overcast & easterly fetch, temps both Wed & Thur were 20º
below seasonable averages. My daily high Thur was 66, or 4º colder
than the previous cold high.

>From th Blacksburg VA NWS office, these cold high temperature records
were noted for Wed:
Ronoake 68 (Previous 70 in 1985)
Bluefield Tied at 63 (1986)
Lynchburg Tied at 64 (1915)

4pm Thur temps were cooler at the beaches than the WV mountians!

More showers are due thru early next week. We still need rain.
