[STORMREPORTS] Temperature records fall at DCA

From: JimTheWeatherGuy{at}aol.com
Date: Mon Aug 19 2002 - 17:58:44 EDT

Hidi-ho good neighbors. Greetings from the weather office at Reagan National
Airport in Washington, DC. Today's high temperature was 98 degrees. It breaks
the previous high temperature for this date of 97 degrees set in 1914. It
also ties a record with eighth consecutive 95+ degree day at DCA which has
been set on a couple of occasions. It also is the fifth high temperature
record set for August which is the most new high temperature records for
August since 1930. It appears the long awaited cold front will move through
tonight with no rain. DCA is still sitting at 0.09 inches of rain for the
month which is more than double the amount recorded in areas south of the
city. The governor of Maryland may proclaim several Maryland counties as
disaster areas as the worst drought since 1930 has ravaged many parts of the
region. Rainfall deficits of 10 inches are not unheard of for this year while
areas along the Mason Dixon Line have had deficits of nearly two feet since
the beginning of 2001. The rainfall deficit for my home station in
Smithsburg, MD is now at 45.18 inches since July 1998.
In an interesting twist of fate here at DCA. The number of 90+ degree days so
far in the summer of 2002 is 24. The number of 90+ degree days in the two
previous summers of 2000 and 2001 combined is 3. Until later.
            Jim
