"Typhoon Phanfone nears Tokyo (Associated Press)
Strong winds and heavy rains hammered Japan's main island of Honshu on
Sunday, as a typhoon threatened to strike Tokyo and surrounding areas
within a day, the Meteorological Agency said.

Phanfone was packing surface winds of up to 144 kph (90 mph) and was slowly
sweeping toward the Pacific island of Hachijojima — about 290 kilometers
(180 miles) south of Tokyo, the agency said. The typhoon was expected to
hit the island late Sunday night and the Tokyo area by Monday afternoon,
before veering north along Japan's eastern seaboard.

The agency warned of high waves of up to 10 meters (30 feet) and as much as
250 millimeters (10 inches) of rain in some areas, as the typhoon
approaches. On Saturday, four people disappeared in rough seas off the
coast of Kanagawa prefecture (state), west of Tokyo."
