"NICKERSON, Kan. - Debbie Adams stepped outside after the storm and
discovered that she lived on an island. Floodwaters covered cars to
their windows, and tree limbs snapped by 100 mph winds blocked street
after street.

A supercell thunderstorm that morphed into a line known as a bow echo
slammed Nickerson and South Hutchinson with straight-line winds of up to
100 mph and as much as 4 inches of rain, meteorologists for the National
Weather Service said.

As much as 7 inches of rain fell in Rice County, and more than 4 inches
in Reno County to the south. The rain came in time to help farmers' late
grain sorghum or soybeans, but too late for most fall row crops.

Winds of up to 60 mph were recorded in Sedgwick County, and more than
9,000 customers in Sedgwick, Butler and Harvey counties lost power
during the storm. Westar Energy spokesman Kent Myers said utility crews
expected to have all Wichita-area customers who lost power back online
by Tuesday evening."
