Storm burst batters area
Emergencies in Portage; winds possibly 100 mph
By Andrea Misko
Beacon Journal staff writer
Portage County and the city of Ravenna declared states of emergency Wednesday
evening after a powerful storm with winds possibly reaching 100 mph snapped trees,
knocked down power lines and damaged homes.
The entire city was without power, according to Ravenna Police Chief Randall McCoy.
FirstEnergy reported between 10,000 and 12,000 customers without power in Stark, Summit and Portage counties.
...
The weather service measured winds at 61 mph at Akron-Canton Regional Airport in Green
about 4:30 p.m. But judging from the damage in Portage County, Spicer said, winds easily
could have reached 100 mph.
...
``We had a lot of wind damage,'' Spicer said. ``A lot of trees are down... trees 18 to 20 inches in diameter.''
Spicer called the severe thunderstorm that hit the area a microburst, when winds up to 100 mph come
straight out of a storm and hit the ground in a direct path.
It is not a tornado and no tornadoes were reported Wednesday, he said.
