The Governor of South Carolina declared 39 counties in extreme
drought conditions yesterday, prompting voluntary water restrictions
in the affected areas. The state Deputy Director of the Department
of Natural Resources said if the voluntary measures don't work,
mandatory restrictions might be necessary. Only 7 low country
counties were not included in this update. Lake Jocassee, located 2
miles from my location in Northwest South Carolina, is 22 feet below
full stage, while Lake Keowee, downstream from Lake Jocassee, and a
major water supply for Greenville, is 6 feet below full stage. While
a few areas have received temporary relief from scattered storms, the
long term effects continue to worsen.
