Southern Europe Sizzles in Summer Scorcher (Reuters)

"A scorching summer heatwave has swept southern Europe, sending hundreds to
hospital, thousands to the beach and some to prayer.

Athenians wilted as temperatures spiked to a year high of 105 F on Tuesday
and a blanket of heat settled over the sprawling and densely populated
city. In Yugoslavia, temperatures have been hovering around 100 F for
days, with those in the cities suffering the most. Meanwhile in Bosnia,
peacekeepers on patrol sweated in their armored vehicles and heavy battle
gear as temperatures topped 95 F. Temperatures in excess of 86 F in
Portugal were not unusual for the time of year, but coupled with hot, dry
easterly winds were triggering forest fires."

Heat wave sweeps across the Balkans (Associated Press)
Health officials in Bulgaria and Romania on Tuesday urged people to stay in
the shade and drink lots of liquids to avoid falling victim to a heat wave
sweeping across the Balkans.

In Bulgaria, temperatures in the northeastern city of Targovishte climbed
to 41 degrees Celsius (105.8 degrees Fahrenheit) on Tuesday, well above the
normal July temperatures of 30 C (86 F) to 35 C (95 F).
