Typhoon Halong hits Okinawa; heavy rains, winds cause flight
cancelations (Associated Press)
Typhoon Halong churned through Japan's southernmost island of Okinawa on
Sunday, bringing heavy rains and strong winds that forced the
cancellation of flights and ferries and stranded thousands of travelers.
There were no reports of casualties. Japan's Meteorological Agency said
Halong, with sustained winds of 144 kph (89 mph), had reached Okinawa
just after nightfall. It was expected to continue dumping rain on the
island through Monday.
