[STORMREPORTS] Storm in Greece: Flooding, Power Out in Athens

From: Jesse Ferrell (WeatherMatrix) (jesse{at}weathermatrix.net)
Date: Mon Jul 08 2002 - 11:47:44 EDT

A sudden rain storm swept across the Greek capital on Monday, causing power
failures through the city and flooding hundreds of homes.

Electrical shortages knocked out traffic lights, creating havoc on the
capital's busy streets, while the fire department received dozens of calls
to free people stranded in elevators. Emergency services said the storm
dumped about 15 centimeters (four inches) of water on some roads.

Just before the storm, lightning strikes caused two forest fires on a
mountain East of the capital. Both were extinguished, the fire department said.
