"As an interesting sidenote, for those of you that, like I, witnessed some
rather 'strangely hazy but colorful' skies early this afternoon, here's the
explanation from the National Weather
Service....These special messages have been issued as far south as NYC as
of late Saturday!

Good weekend all!

...smoke and odor from fires in quebec province Canada...

smoke from fires east of james bay in central quebec province canada
nearly 700 miles away has advected south to the lehigh valley of
pennsylvania and northern new jersey. prevailing surface and upper
levels winds are from the source of the fires...or north...and will
continue to bring smoke and the odor from the fires this afternoon
and evening.

the sky appears reddish and there will be some reduced visibilities
especially in the higher elevations.

visible satellite photographs shows the leading edge of the smoke on
a line from reading pennsylvania due east to pt. pleasant new jersey
on the coast. the plume will continue to push south to the remainder
of southeast pennsylvania...northeast maryland...delaware and
southern new jersey over the next couple of hours.

the sky will be reddish at sundown and if the concentration of smoke
is thick enough at sunrise on sunday.

the smoke has reduced the visibilities in some locations down to 3
miles."
