"NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Nearly two dozen people were killed and thousands
left homeless as torrential monsoon rains lashed large parts of Asia over
the weekend, worsening floods and triggering fresh storms and landslides.

The densely populated regions of eastern India and neighboring Bangladesh
were worst affected, with the homes of some 300,000 flooded in India and
half a million people marooned in Bangladesh, officials said on Sunday. In
Assam, another eastern Indian state, officials said some 100,000 people had
been affected by the floods of whom an estimated 50,000 had fled their
homes to safety.

Officials in Bangladesh said they were bracing for a major disaster in the
next two weeks due to heavy rain and floodwaters sweeping down the rivers
from India."

Elsewhere in South-East Asia, the Philippines counted the highest casualty
toll as it was battered by heavy rains intensified by two typhoons.

Government officials in South Korea ( news - web sites) said that, while
Rammasun had died after turning into a tropical storm on Saturday night,
they remained on alert as Chata'an gathered force near Guam and moved
northwest at a fast pace. Officials in the central Chinese province of
Shaanxi: "Roads have been cut and a lot of telephone lines are out," said
an anti-flood official in the city of Zichang which received more than 30
cm (12 inches) of rain last week. He gave no word of casualties. "
