Rushing Rivers Flood Central, Southern Texas (Reuters)

"Rushing rivers swept through central and southern Texas on Saturday,
flooding homes and farmland in the aftermath of a six-day storm that dumped
more than 40 inches of rain and killed at least
eight people.

The storm that dropped as much 42 inches in parts of the region moved 200
miles north on Friday and hit northwestern Texas with up to 10 inches of
rain. Hundreds of people had to be evacuated from several towns near
Abilene because of flash flooding, police said.

During the night, officials warned that the 90-year-old Medina Dam had
sprung leaks and was in danger of giving way, which would inundate the
river valley with a 60-foot wall of water.

As the floodwaters moved south from the Hill Country, the weather service
warned that small towns all the way to the Gulf of Mexico 150 miles away
would be affected. It said overflowing rivers were expected to damage
crops, flood pastureland and force the evacuation of livestock in the
mostly agricultural region."
