The smoke is visible on sattelite. If I am right it has made it to almost
NY. Jeff

Steven, The smoke you witnessed last night and today covered much of the
Great Lakes area, most of Ontario, parts of the midwest including NY, PA,
OH and as far south as WVA and KY as revealed by today's visible sat
pictures. For the most part it seemed to be very high based. There were
cumulus mediocris today over Southeastern Ontario where I live and the tops
were well below the smoke layer. It did not mix down to the earth's surface
here, locally, despite the convective overturning this afternoon. The smoke
originates over Saskatchewan and Manitoba where huge forest fires are
burning at the present time and was drifting southeastward in the mid level
flows. You can see the bluish smoke in the two satellite shots attached
here. The smoke created an absolutely beautiful sunset this evening with
the sun a big red ball and the western sky slightly purplish in colour. I
also attach a photo of the sunset this evening over Kingston, Ontario.

Steven and all I had read sometime during the day I believe it was a AFD
from Chicago that stated that the haze was from the heat itself. Basiclly
ozone. The NWS is talking about heat advisories starting on Sunday will be
interesting to see if they issue them. air quality warnings are Ozone
Action Days.******************************************************* John

Hello The local Nws radio been stateing high level of smoke and haze in the
area of northern Iowa due to the wild fires out west. Enjoy the sunset and
sunrise and stay inside if you have any breathing problems. tec At 10:06 PM

I live in NW IL and yes its the smoke from the fires out west. The jet
stream is positioned right over them and running all the way north through
Canada and right back down on top of us. The smoke is rising into the jet
stream and is then being carried up and back down to us here in IL...causing
the orange skies and poor air quality coupled with the heat and humidity we
are experiencing. Something very cool to take notice of...you can also see
on satellite photos that the smoke is a darker gray the the clouds
themselves.
Take Care!

Hi Steven, I'm also in NE IL (Lake/Cook Counties by Lake Michigan). What
I've seen/heard is reports that the "haze" is from Canadian fires, not the
AZ/CO fires in the US. For my part, I couldn't identify smoke in the air
above me, or in the satellite imagery which I checked; and I've stumbled
across no reference at all of fires in Canada. It is season enough however
for a good bratwurst ;-} --Maynard On Fri, 21 Jun 2002 22:06:43 EDT,
