Dark skies and heavy weather blanketed the eastern Panhandle on Saturday
night.
Saturday's thunderstorms stretched into Oklahoma and Kansas, as well.
Clarendon residents were left in darkness by the rumblers, but details on
the lack of electricity were scant at press time, said Donley County
Sheriff's Dispatcher LeeAnn Cook.
The drive to work for a Hemphill County Sheriff's dispatcher turned out to
be a little trickier than she expected.
"I drove in from Wheeler and there were limbs blocking the highways
everywhere. Traffic was backed up," said Dispatcher Lori Steen. "There was
also hail and some rain."
About six windows of the Armstrong County Courthouse in Claude were blown in
as the storms hit that area, leaving broken tree limbs on the courthouse
lawn. There were at least three auto accidents, with one person injured
enough to require medical attention, said Ronda Aduddell, jail administrator
for the Armstrong County Sheriff's Department.
In the Perryton area, the main story was wind.
"We have some electric lines down and poles broken but no rain or hail,"
said an Ochiltree County dispatcher.
At press time, the storms were exiting the Panhandle through Childress and
Hall counties.
Earlier in the evening, in the northwest part of the Panhandle, nickel-size
hail fell 10 miles east of Hartley just before 6 p.m.
National Weather Service meteorologist Steve Drillette said 60 mph winds
arrived at 5:57 p.m. seven miles south of Spearman. Winds with the same
speed were reported shortly after 6 p.m. west of Dumas, he said.
Drillette said 70 mph winds were reported at 6:10 from Stinnett.
He said the Dumas airport received quarter-size hail. Sanford also reported
quarter-size hail. Drillette estimated most areas received about .25 inch of
rain.
