A series of strong thunderstorms hit the lower Florida Keys this afternoon
(6/15). High winds accompanied the storms, knocking down power lines and
causing most of Key West to be without power.
The National Weather Service Forecast Office at Key West recorded a wind
gust of 41 knots just before 1pm. A wind gust of 36mph was recorded at the
Southernmost Weather Observatorium at the same time.
The winds were responsible for downing power lines in Key West. Much of
the southern part of the island was without power for at least two hours
while electic crews repaired the lines.
The Weather Service Office recorded .80" of pcpn in about an hour's time
while at this station, three miles to the south of NWS, .75" of pcpn was
recorded.
NWS EYW also has issued special marine warnings for continued strong winds
and thunderstorms between the lower Florida Keys and the mainland.
Numerous low-lying roads on Key West were flooded, causing traffic to come
to a halt.
This system came out of the Gulf of Mexico and is headed northeast across
South Florida.
