Yesterdays weather was dominated by a system in
northern Germany
which caused many showers and thunderstorms, some them
approaching
severe limits.
While a chaser caught a storm with a beautiful arcus
and whale`s
mouth with some hailstones (about 2cm) and strong
gusts, another
storm spawned a tornado in Wittenberg, about 250km WSW
of Berlin
later in the evening.
Although instabilities were weak (CAPE obly about
400-500J/kg)
dynamics were very significant (speed shear about 40
kts 0-6km) and
some veering in the lowest 3km, allowing for helicity
values to be
marginal (100-150 m²s²).
Storms were oriented NE-SW along a line so the tornado
was probably
of a gustnado nature.
Helicity often is enhanced significantly by local
orography in
Germany, thereby affecting the storm (supercells are
mainly large
hail producers over here).
Next days will become very warm (Monday about 30-35°C)
with a new
system moving in on TUE, so new strong storms are
likely...well see
Later,
Lars
