"Eight people were found dead Friday after fierce thunderstorms swept
across Europe, leaving a trail of flooded roads, collapsed houses and
downed bridges from France to Poland.
Regional officials in northeastern Italy declared a state of emergency,
while in Austria the military was deployed to battle the effects of flooding.
At least three people died in storm-battered Bavaria, in Germany.

In southeastern France, torrential rains unleashed floods and mudslides
that collapsed two houses and carried cars away.

Four hikers in the Mediterranean island of Corsica were taken by surprise
by the storms and spent the night outdoors, in the cold and wet conditions.

In Poland, a teen-age girl and boy were killed by lightning in the southern
town of Sosnowiec. A five-year-old girl died after she was hit by a falling
tree branch in the western town of Pila.

On Thursday, the waters in Venice had surged to 1.21 meters (nearly four
feet), setting a record high for June. High waters made the use of
footbridges impossible, disrupting life for locals and tourists alike.

A state of emergency was declared in parts of Fruili, in northeastern
Italy, while rains washed out a bridge over the Cervo river in nearby Biella.

In Switzerland, rail and road traffic was badly disrupted in the central
cantons of Lucerne and Schwyz, and agriculture fields, fruit orchards and
vines were damaged. Police in Schwyz said they received several hundred
distress calls in the space of two hours."
