Date: Thu Jun 06 2002 - 19:23:57 EDT

Winchester (nw) VA

Baltimore MD TV stations are reporting that the famed Wye Oak, in Talbot
Co (US Rt 50 on east side of the Chesapeake Bay) was downed by high
winds. It had been recognized as America's oldest oak tree, about 500
years old.

More details of the tree itself at:
http://www.dnr.state.md.us/forests/trees/giant.html

Meanwhile, the Baltimore Washington office has issued about 8 tornado &
about 14 severe thunderstorm warnings this afternoon.

One of the warnings included a spotted tornado (by law enforcement) in
the Orange Co (central VA) and another was reported in northern MD
between Frederick & Westminster.

Locally, we had a gusty thunderstorm about 4:45pm. I measured a PWG of
32mph, and a had numerous twigs downed.

Other stations in the area measured higher gusts [46mph at James Wood
HS] and [50mph at Winchester Regional Airport]. There was a report of a
tree downed into a house in NE Winchester. I have no additional details
now.

The back edge of the rain will pass by 9pm. My total now is .37" for
today, and a 3 day storm total of 1.50". After a high of 80 today, it is
now only 63º, the coolest daytime temp in 2 weeks.

I will try work on fuller report either Fri or Sat on this week's series
of severe storms.
