7:23PM a report of Ice Cube (1 Inch) Size Hail in the city of Albernett
in Linn County. At 7:42PM 1 Inch hail was reported in Springville in
far East central Linn County.at about the same time KCRG TV-9 and KGAN
CH-2 went live on the air showing pictures of a wall cloud over Cedar
Rapids/Marion in Central Linn County the following pictures were taken
from the KCRG Hawkeye
To Look at the pics go to http://www.wxduck.com/5_30_02_summary.htm
At 7:45PM Aprox. 1 mile north of Marion 1 inch diameter hail was
reported. At 7:55PM .88 Inch diameter hail was reported in Springville.
At 8:00PM .75 inch diameter hail was reported in Springville. Then at
8:04PM National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated a tornado over
southeast Linn county. At that time the National Weather Service issued
a Tornado Warning for Southeast Linn, Southern Jones, And Cedar Counties
until 9:10PM. At 8:12PM I gathered my chasing materials and headed
out.I talked to the NWS and a local tv station, Chief Meteorologist
Terry Swails At KWQC TV-6 In Davenport, IA, and questioned a good spot
to start heading. It was determined to head west from my house in
Oxford Mills, IA on County Road X-64 and go to Clarence and head south
on Co. Rd. X-64 to State Highway 130 then head west towards Tipton.
When turning on to state hwy. 130 the wall cloud was starting to become
visible way off to the west aprox. 15-20 miles away. Once in Tipton is
was determined to head west on County Road X-60 about 10 miles and
observe from there. On the way to our predetermined spotting area we
ran into golfball size hail for about 2 min. 2 rolls of pictures were
taken but may not turn out due to lateness of the day and lack of good
light. We reached the Wall Cloud at aprox 8:40PM numerous funnels
appeared during the time period from 8:43 to 9:05PM at 9:00PM the
largest funnel was observed and report was forwarded on to the National
Weather Service In the Quad Cities. At that time the Wall Cloud was
aprox 5 miles off to our east. We decided to start following the wall
cloud back towards Tipton. At 9:10PM the Wall Cloud was over Tipton we
stoped at Hardee's for a quick bite to eat and was back on the road by
9:15PM. We then followed the Wall Cloud for about another 30 min. to
about 5 miles east of Bennet on Hwy. 130. We then called it a day and
headed back for home. Returned back to Weather Duck Inc. Base In Oxford
Mills At 10:19PM. Total mileage 98 miles and a quarter of a tank of gas.
Special Thanks to KCRG TV-9 for the pictures of the wall cloud.
