The Sunshine Skyway bridge in Florida collapsed during a downpour after a
boat impacted an unprotected approach pier. I am a bridge designer and know
that piers each side of the channel are well protected but other apprach
piers usually are not. It seems that in both of these cases the boat/barge
got way off courss and impacted an unprotected pier and may have been
running blind during a downpour. The problem was further worsened because
the people on the bridge could not see it was down and drove off the end,
perhaps some type of early warning for bridge out......or the solution could
be to better control the channel to keep the barge on course.

According to CNN and whomever the guy might of had a seizure driving the
barge. The barge was also heading upstream. My guess is it was operator
error, other bridges have been hit and nocked down due to operator error.
